Aberbargoed Grasslands National Nature Reserve Education Centre

What’s there?

Home to a large population of the rare Marsh Fritillary butterfly. Rushes, Meadow Thistle, Lousewort and Devils Bit Scabious all thrive in these damp meadows. The Heath Spotted Orchids that flower in May are a spectacular sight.

In June the Marsh Fritillary butterflies can be seen flying lazily across the grasslands feeding on the scabious. You may be lucky to hear Garden Warblers, Whitethroats (for a little bird they make a mighty racket!) and Blackcaps all trying to be heard above the crickets and grasshoppers.

Why it’s special

Aberbargoed Grasslands is a National Nature Reserve Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and it is also protected as a site of European importance for the large population of Marsh Fritillary butterflies and its Purple Moor grass and rush pasture. Because of changes in the way we farm nowadays wet meadows like these are disappearing fast and the wildlife they support is becoming rare.
