The Winding Engine at The Winding House, New Tredegar

The Winding House is built on the site of the former Elliot Colliery. The museum’s centre-piece is the original Victorian winding engine. This remarkable machinery was used to operate the cages which transported men and coal between the surface and the mine below.

Our dedicated and enthusiastic Engine Volunteers maintain and run the engine for members of the public on specific days throughout the year.

The engine runs for approximately 10-15 minutes.

In 2018, the engine will run on the following dates:-

  • August 25th
  • September 29th
  • October 27th
  • November 24th

Please note, the engine no longer runs on Bank Holidays.

The Big Cheese at Caerphilly Castle

Set in the shadows of Wales’ largest castle, the The Big Cheese is an extravaganza of street entertainers, fantastic food, living history encampments, live music, dance, traditional funfair, folk dancing, falconry, fire eating, minstrels and much more.

This fun event attracts over 80,000 people annually and delights audiences; both young and old. Entrance to Caerphilly Castle, with its amazing leaning tower and beautiful grounds, is completely free for the weekend too!

“Entertainment is the life and soul of the festival with live music acts, choirs and dancers. Caerphilly Castle is transformed into a medieval encampment with re-enactment displays and battles. See what medieval life was like within the Castle walls and watch the villagers as they go about their daily tasks.

A huge traditional funfair is open throughout the festival along with many craft stalls lining the Castle’s moat. Children’s activities are plentiful with animal encounters, crafts, educational experiences and much more.

The Big Cheese is a ‘must see’ attraction for all visitors, celebrating its 21st year in 2018. Portraying the history, heritage and culture of Caerphilly. Families from all over the country flocked to Caerphilly to experience this fun filled programme of activities and entertainment.”
